Encouranging Men to Talk About Mental Health. Do you have 8 minutes?

Updated: Apr 30, 2024

In the construction industry, mental health is a topic that is often swept under the rug due to the stigma it can carry. In an industry that is predominately male, the stereotype is that men must be both physically and mentally tough to endure the job. Mental health is a significant concern for workers in construction. It’s no wonder why people refer to this problem as “the silent epidemic."

Construction can be a high-stress environment, driven by deadlines and long working hours. Many workers deal with physical pain and fatigue that can lead to poor emotional well-being over time. However, this should not be at the detriment of their mental health. Stigma is often a barrier for people who may be struggling. Mental health may be a sensitive topic,

but it is imperative to break the stigma.

It is important to address one’s mental health by practicing relieving techniques. Some of these techniques include normalizing conversations about mental health, a healthier diet and getting in some exercise. One can also enlist the help of a support group or mental health professional, should the need arise.

For more information about breaking the stigma and encouraging more men to talk about mental health, check out this article from the ConAg Expo. Also, please check out these two short videos below, it could save a life.
