Our People Are Our Strategy
Updated: Sep 1
When I was asked to write an article on Our People Are Our Strategy, I knew what I wanted to say, but putting it into words was more challenging than expected. As I reflected on past newsletters, one theme stood out clearly: so many of our S.E.R.V.I.C.E. principles come back to our people.
Whether the message is safety, empowerment, reliability, caring, innovation, excellence, or long-term viability, our people are the ones who bring those principles to life. Long-term success depends on having a strong workforce ready to work, lead, adapt, and grow. Equipment, materials, technology, data, cost control, and processes all matter, but none of them create lasting success without good people who care about the work, care about each other, and understand why their role matters.

I’ve seen how some companies treat people as numbers, and I’ve never believed you can build a strong team that way. I appreciate working for a company that truly values its people. People thrive when they are respected, listened to, trained, supported, recognized, and treated fairly. When leaders build trust, communicate clearly, and follow through, teams become stronger and employees are more willing to speak up, share ideas, take ownership, and help solve problems.
That matters across every part of Reed Family Companies. From the field to the plants, from the road to the shops and offices, every role contributes to the strength and long-term viability of our companies. Some employees have been here for decades, and others are just starting their careers, but we are connected by the impact each person has on the work, the team, and the future of the company. Continuing to grow our people through learning, development, and opportunity is part of protecting that future.

For managers and supervisors, this principle requires intentional leadership. If our people are our strategy, we must be transparent whenever possible, consistent in how we treat people, fair in our decisions, and willing to listen before we respond. Strong teams are built through trust, accountability, recognition, follow-through, and leading by example. There is no room for egos when the goal is to support our people, improve the work, and move the company forward.

People are also more willing to support change and improvement when they understand the facts. A hands-on, KPI- and data-driven approach helps us see where we are, where we need to improve, and whether our changes are working. It also helps us make better decisions, not by cutting corners, but by choosing the right parts, equipment, and long-term solutions that improve safety, quality, reliability, and cost control. The best improvements happen when we combine facts, experience, and teamwork.
Every employee has a part in this strategy. When you work safely, care for equipment, use resources wisely, communicate clearly, share ideas, and treat others with professionalism and respect, you help build trust, strengthen our reputation, and support continuous improvement. These daily actions create the foundation for long-term success.
“Our People Are Our Strategy” because people turn plans into action, problems into solutions, and individual effort into team success. When we invest in our people, communicate openly, develop leaders, and recognize the value of every role, we strengthen the foundation that allows our companies to grow, adapt, compete, and succeed.
Thank you to every employee across Reed Family Companies for the work you do each day. You are the foundation of our success and the reason we continue to move forward together.
*We have over 800 employees during our peak season, and it would be great to have everyone in this group of pictures. But it isn't practical and it would take forever for the page to load. But we would love a picture of your group or department. You can email pictures to BUILD@reed.net.
