Working Around The Clock at 7/11's Pine Creek Quarry

At 7/11 Materials, meeting customer needs while maintaining safe, efficient operations is a a top priority. Over the past several months, the team at Pine Creek Quarry in Chico has exemplified that commitment through hard work, adaptability, and outstanding leadership.

Led by Josh Gay, the Pine Creek Quarry crew, consisting of Jerry Delgado, Kris Mosley, and Tyler Mosley, has taken on an operational challenge that is far from routine. Since May, the team has been working a demanding schedule of alternating 12-hour shifts (operating 24-hours), an arrangement that is highly unusual both for the mine site and for 7/11 Materials operations as a whole.

The reason behind the effort is simple: supporting an important customer. To meet the production demands of DeSilva Gates, the Pine Creek crew has been supplying almost 60,000 tons of crushed asphalt and road base, ensuring material availability while maintaining the high standards expected from 7/11 Materials. And that number is still growing.  This is in addition to their standard aggregate production for all the other customers.

What makes their performance particularly noteworthy is that, despite the increased workload and unconventional schedule, the crew has continued to prioritize safety and operational excellence. During this period, Pine Creek Quarry successfully underwent two regulatory inspections. One from Cal/OSHA and one from MSHA with zero citations issued for each inspection. Achieving a citation-free outcome under normal operating conditions is an accomplishment; doing so while managing extended shifts and elevated production demands speaks volumes about the crew's dedication, attention to detail, and commitment to compliance and beyond.

The success of the operation reflects the leadership provided by Josh Gay. His ability to coordinate schedules, maintain safe working conditions, and keep the team focused on customer service has not gone unnoticed. Recently, Josh received the following commendation, from Ramon Neilson, recognizing his efforts:

“You have pretty much hit all the S.E.R.V.IC.E. Principles with our current job. The plant is in good safe condition even with the workload. You have empowered your people to step up to the plate and produce. All of you have been reliable for changing schedules and innovative on how to make them happen. The crew has demonstrated flexibility when schedules changed, innovation when challenges arose, and a willingness to go above and beyond to support both the customer and the company. Their efforts have helped ensure that DeSilva Gates received the materials needed to keep its operations moving forward, while simultaneously maintaining the high safety standards that define 7/11 Materials.
