Ian Davies and Scott Williams from the RFC Compliance Department lead four Boy Scouts and two Troop Leaders from Troop 488 for the Great Sierra River Cleanup on Sept 19, 2026. The group collected over 100 pounds of trash, including three tires, three floats, a chair, and two bags of garbage. They were part of a larger volunteer effort to clean up California's waterways. The Great Sierra River Cleanup is a Sierra-wide watershed cleanup event coordinated by Sierra Nevada Alliance in collaboration with California’s Coastal Cleanup Day On that day, 73 people volunteered and 1200 lbs of trash and recyclables was collected.

Each year, the Great Sierra River Cleanup along the Mokelumne River provides an opportunity for community members to come together in support of environmental stewardship and watershed protection. For Reed Family Companies, environmental stewardship and sustainability are part of our one of Reed Family Companies' S.E.R.V.I.C.E. Principles that extends beyond regulatory compliance and into active community involvement. Through partnerships with organizations such as East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) and local Boy Scout troops, Reed Family Companies proudly participates in this annual event to help preserve the natural resources that support local communities, agriculture, wildlife, and recreation. The cleanup serves as a powerful example of how collaboration and volunteerism can make a lasting difference in protecting one of California's most treasured waterways.

The event is much more than a litter cleanup. Volunteers work together to remove trash and debris from riverbanks, reservoirs, and recreational areas, helping to improve water quality, reduce impacts to fish and wildlife habitat, and promote public awareness about the importance of healthy watersheds. While site-specific totals for the Mokelumne River cleanup are not consistently reported, the broader Great Sierra River Cleanup effort removes substantial amounts of waste each year, with statewide events collecting nearly 400,000 pounds of trash in a single year. Based on participation levels and the geographic extent of the Mokelumne River cleanup locations, it is reasonable to estimate that hundreds to several thousand pounds of trash and debris are removed annually from the Mokelumne River corridor. These efforts help ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy a clean, healthy, and vibrant river ecosystem.

Individuals interested in volunteering at future cleanup events can learn more and register through the Great Sierra River Cleanup website or by visiting the Foothill Conservancy event page. Community participation remains essential to the continued success of these cleanups, and Reed Family Companies encourages employees, families, and local residents to join in making a positive impact on the Mokelumne River watershed.
