RT Density Demo at UC Davis

Updated: Dec 1, 2024

One of Reed Family Companies’ core philosophies is “Better Roads, Better Lives.” Though our companies do a lot of varied work between material production, construction services, and manufacturing, one of our key roles is providing our communities with the best value roads and roadway maintenance.

On November 6, George Reed exemplified this by going above and beyond to perform paving work supporting the research of UC Pavement Research Center at UC Davis.

George Reed provided the researchers specialty asphalt mixes from our Clements plant. These new asphalt concrete mixes are undergoing rigorous testing, obtained through coring, traffic simulation, and other laboratory tests to determine the best asphalt concrete specifications for the future. Our partnership plays an integral role in helping our state maintain and grow the over 380,000 road miles that we use to travel and transport the goods we use every day.

In attendance at the event was RTDensity, our technology startup that provides live readings of asphalt compaction to the entire construction team, from operator to quality control. We were able to provide reporting to the UC Davis system showing that our calibrated readings were within 1% of the true lab-measured density! This was despite the unique mixes and high-density targets. As our systems collect more data, our accuracy will continue to improve. This technology may one day soon find its way onto the asphalt vibratory rollers throughout our industry.

George Reed put a lot of effort and resources into making this project happen, because that is the cost of the innovation that propels our country forward. We are a well-recognized leader in our national organizations because we put the effort in.
