VSS Safety Stand-Down. Building a Stronger Safety Culture

VSS International’s West Sacramento and Arizona teams came together for their Spring Safety Stand-Down, reinforcing the importance of staying focused and aware on every job site.

Crews, operators, and drivers reviewed common field risks like strains, trips, and caught between hazards, then moved into hands-on training covering fire extinguisher use, vehicle brake inspections, and fall protection. These are the real-world situations our teams face daily across pavement preservation, slurry seal, and roadway maintenance projects throughout the Western United States.

The focus was simple. Build habits that carry into the field, reduce risk, and keep everyone safe. We also recognized team members who lead by example through safe driving and strong situational awareness  Congrats to all employees who received a safety award.

Safety goes beyond a stand-down event. It shows up in every job, every crew, and every decision we make at VSS International.

Safety is more than a policy. It is a commitment we make to ourselves, our coworkers, and our families every day. Our recent Safety Stand-Down brought employees together for a day dedicated to strengthening the knowledge and skills that help keep our jobsites safe. The event provided an opportunity for hands-on training, discussion, and collaboration while reinforcing that safety remains our highest priority. Throughout the event, employees participated in a variety of hands-on activities and discussions designed to strengthen our safety culture. Crews reviewed hazard recognition techniques, fall protection requirements, proper personal protective equipment (PPE) usage, and defensive driving principles.

• Interactive demonstrations and equipment inspections gave employees the opportunity to share experiences and discuss lessons learned from real world incidents.

• The day featured interactive demonstrations on fire extinguisher use, where employees reviewed the different classes of fires and practiced the proper PASS technique: Pull, Aim, Squeeze, and Sweep to safely operate a fire extinguisher during an emergency.

• Crews also participated in trailer brake adjustment training, emphasizing the importance of properly maintained braking systems for the safe transportation of equipment and materials. Employees learned how to inspect and adjust trailer brakes, recognize signs of wear, and understand how routine maintenance plays a critical role in preventing roadway incidents.

• Another key focus of the Stand-Down was fall protection, one of the most important aspects of construction safety. Employees reviewed proper harness inspection procedures, correct tie-off methods, anchor point selection, and the importance of maintaining 100% fall protection whenever working at height. Real world scenarios and practical demonstrations of our Macropaver Personal Fall Arrest System reinforced the importance of using the equipment correctly before stepping onto the equipment platform.

In addition to safety presentations, teams participated in safety quizzes, and friendly competitions that reinforced key safety concepts while encouraging teamwork and engagement. These activities served as a reminder that safety is everyone's responsibility and that every decision we make on the job can impact the lives of those around us.
