Why “Go Red” for American Heart Month?

Updated: Feb 2

Over the years we have lost beloved members of our work family at too young an age due to heart disease, and seen others unable to fully enjoy their retirement due to poor health. We 'Go Red' every February to raise awareness about heart disease and stroke, ultimately aiming to SAVE LIVES.

Heart attack and stroke are life-or-death emergencies – every second counts. The Build Your Health Section of this newsletter explains the warning signs of heart attack or stroke and when to to call 911.

Cardiovascular disease and stroke are the #1 and #5 killers in the U.S., claiming about one life every 40 seconds. 90% of those who experience cardiac arrest outside of the hospital die. We ask that you wear red on Friday, February 7th to show your support for our fight against cardiovascular disease. More importantly, we encourage you to implement one or more of these ideas for observing American Heart Month.

1. Take up a heart-healthy habit

Staying active, eating healthy, and watching our weight are all important parts of maintaining a healthy cardiovascular system. Pick a new heart-healthy habit like walking or substituting sodas with water and try to stick to it for a whole month.

2. Educate yourself

Learn about the risk factors for heart disease, the ways you can prevent them, and the lifestyle choices that can help you stay healthy. The BUILD YOUR HEALTH section of our employee newsletter has tips each month to improve total wellbeing.

3. Get your cholesterol and blood pressure checked

If you’re worried you might be at risk for heart disease, ask your doctor to perform a simple cholesterol test to let you know if you are at risk. Reed Family companies will again be offering free biometric screening during orientation meetings starting later in February.

Please show your support on Friday, February 7th, by wearing red and participating in other “Go Red” activities. Sign up for free biometric screenings during annual orientations. Together we can raise awareness and save lives!
